Steve Stoute Forms New Ad Agency w/ Jay-Z

It’s safe to assume the annual December “powerbroker” trip to St. Barths this year involved some time plotting career moves for Shawn Carter and Steve Stoute. (this picture looks like a shot from the airport) Stoute was riding high from a recent sale of his agency, Translation Marketing to interpublic for a conservative $10 Million. Jay-Z was getting ready to announce his exit from post at Def Jam, a gig that had lost its allure due to a record business that is in the toilet. For those speculating for the last few days in the blogosphere, the rumor has become reality. Today’s NYT reports that Jay-Z’s next move will be to create Translation Advertising with partner Steve Stoute and formalize something that has been happening anyway over the last few years. For those close to Translation it was not uncommon for Stoute to spend hours on the phone with Carter coming up with ideas and programs for brands. Now the two have a company umbrella to call home and I’m sure Interpublic will be bending over backwards to make the venture a success. Money seems to chase both Stoute and Carter and this will be a successful venture we are sure. No talk of a digital arm, nor interactive advertising component yet, but even in a multicultural advertising market, the addition of Jay-Z already makes them a powerful player.

Mattel Joins The CAA Mafia

The image “https://i0.wp.com/www.handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/Mattel-FootballI.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I have been spending more time lately in El Segundo with the talented Mattel Girl’s Marketing Group (Lindsay Hollingsworth, Kate Lonker, Lauren Daughtery, Betsy Burkett, Clara Crowder). They are a great group to talk to and I look forward to the potential of more time “finding my wallet in El Segundo.” Mattel is in the news today because of their new relationship with CAA. CAA is another organization I have spent a bit of time with during my days on the Coke/Sprite team. It appears that Mattel is now working with CAA to exploit their properties and make some hits in Hollywood and various other screens. Hasbro already has a deal at WB for He-Man and obviously still counting their money on the success of Transformers. With Barbie getting ready to celebrate her 50th next year, what can we expect to see????

FastCompany.com Unveils New Website At Midnight Tonight

fc_beta.jpg

I got an email from my Fastcompany editor, Lynne Johnson who I’m shocked has not flown to Atlanta to get me for not blogging in a few months. She emailed the Fast Company Expert Bloggers, the elite group which I’m a part of to tell us that the newly designed Fastcompany.com website is launching tonight at midnight. I promise you (and Lynne) that I have some exciting pieces lined up for the next few weeks. I really have to bring the “heat” now that FC is bringing in “all-star” bloggers (Robert Scoble) on the team…….
